With the move toward more minimal and clean mobile user interfaces, app designs now have fewer ways to differentiate from one another. No longer can designers rely on heavy visual design and detailed user interface assets to stand out in the app marketplace. Despite this, there are still a number of ways to achieve a unique app design. These include differentiation through layout, imagery, illustration, icons, and color.
In this article, we will be focused on unique color palettes as a way of standing out and achieving a high quality of visual design.
This app uses a two-tone color scheme behind each product. The result is highly visual and contrasts effectively against the product imagery.
This app uses a simple but effective palette of grey, white, and orange. The simplicity makes it both minimal yet effective as the content is easy to understand from a visual hierarchy standpoint.

Locus Maps uses a simple white background but with a highly visual gradient-based color scheme. The two gradients are orange/red and blue/green, and both offer beautiful contrast and visuals.
This FX app uses a primarily dark theme with highlight colors of red, blue, and green. These bright colors pop beautifully against the navy background and make for a standout color palette.
One of the more colorful examples, this travel app uses an abundance of gradients for tag and button elements. This allows the user to easily differentiate the various tags and it adds visual impact to an otherwise minimal design.
The Diamonds app has selected two unique pastel colors and combined them with custom-positioned background shapes. The resulting visual style is impactful and memorable.
Eventbrite’s redesigned app combines brand colors with inspiring hand-crafted illustrations throughout. The orange color is used consistently and creates a very positive atmosphere within the app.
This checkout flow uses a proven color palette of greens and purples. The way it is combined with visuals such as curved background shapes is what makes it unique and aesthetically impressive.

This dark worksheet app design houses a navy background with accent gradients throughout the iconography and button elements. The resulting contrast is eye-catching and the gradient color choices are perfectly cohesive.
iPhone Ten Years-X
This iPhone X app design uses some very unique color choices. On paper, the combination of so many different colors and gradients would seem questionable but the designer pulls it off beautifully.
